Tesa Shelton, Children's Ministry Team Leader

Our Goal

To have an active, not passive, children’s ministry. By this, EVERYTHING we do is centered on Christ. All members of Grace Church, as well as the parents, will take an active role in teaching our children. The parents should be the primary spiritual teacher, with the church reinforcing those beliefs. We need to realize that this is not just playtime, that the process of teaching our children is serious business, and should be considered as such by all those involved in the teaching of our children. Church should be fun, but it should also be taught that it is a place of reverence and learning about Christ.

We start teaching our children at a young age and saturate them in biblical truths. To do this, we teach them 1) Basic beliefs – for each grade level, there is a set of statements that teaches the foundations of our faith. 2) Scripture memory verses - for each grade level, a specific set of memory verses. 3) Worshiping through song - singing praise songs during the Sunday school hour, as well as singing in church. 4) Prayer - why we pray, the components of prayer, praying Scripture, prayer journaling. 5) Serving others – an age-appropriate service project.

The Sunday School Hour

Begin the hour by singing age-appropriate praise songs. Drill on our basic beliefs and memory verses at the beginning of the class sessions. Then an age-appropriate Sunday school lesson. End the hour in prayer session with the teacher beginning the prayer and the students are invited, but not pressured, to join in. Each class uses the same prayer model. (i.e., P.R.A.Y. - P=Praise and Thanksgiving; R=Repent/ Confession; A=Asking for Assistance for ourselves and others; Y= yielding/waiting on God. - or A.C.T.S. - A=Adoration; C=confession; T=thanksgiving; S=supplication)

Prayer Ministry

We focus on a ministry where each child (babies through college age) has an adult that prays for them on a regular basis. We post a list that contains each child’s name and we ask that our adults pick a child and pray for that child over the course of the year. The adults inform the child that they are praying for them and ask the child to let them know what their prayer concerns are. This way every child in our church is covered in prayer.
