Everything

But Jesus said, “Leave her alone.  Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me.” Mark 14:6 ESV

This woman wasted one years’ worth of wages on Jesus.  Calculate what you make in a year, perhaps at your medium level of earnings.  This would be a lot of money.  Not only that but think about the hours of work that went into that wage.  Now remember this was something she had saved, so this was from the extra work.

She had purchased this ointment in what could be called vanity.  This oil was a scent used to beautify a situation.  It was an excess not an essential.  Some have postulated that she was a prostitute, and this was used to attract customers.  This would be a lavish amount money saved for someone in prostitution at the time.

Imagine taking that item you loved and giving it over to Jesus.  This was not a “need” of his, rather it was something he received as beautiful.  Wow!

I knew of a lady (true story) who did not have much money.  She wanted to but a certain dress for Easter.  She saved her money over the course of a year.  With great joy she went and purchased the dress.  A couple of days later she encountered an even poorer woman who needed dress for a job.  The lady knew God was calling her to give the woman her dress.  She did.  She gave God her best, her desire.  God used this situation to bless both women.

Sometimes God asks you to give the extravagant, are you willing to give it?  What is that thing in your life that you will not give up for Him?  What do you think God might be calling you to do with Him?
