Anger

“I will give thanks to you, O Lord, for though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me.
“Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and will not be afraid; for the Lord God is my strength and my song, and he has become my salvation.” – Isaiah 12:1b-2 (ESV)

Have you ever felt that God is angry with you about something.  I sure have.  Growing up it seemed like that was the topic of every sermon.  God is so angry with you, you are awful, and then at the end…oh yeah, He loves you, too.  The truth is our rebellious actions do anger God.  I think especially when we claim to be His followers.

Sometimes it helps me to see God as a loving Father.  The right kind of Father.  The one you know is always acting in your best interest, even when He is angry.  It is hard to imagine that God’s anger might be in my best interest, that His anger might be just.

We can have a pretty cynical view of the world and people in the world.  We think people are acting out of self-interest not for the benefit of others.  So, when someone gets angry at you, it is really about them not you.  But God is not like this.  He is different.  He knows that truth and love are what is BEST for you.

I would wonder about God's motives, but we have some profound evidence of God’s love towards us even in His anger.  That is Jesus Christ, the Son.  This is the ultimate expression of God’s love.  He died for us because God is ultimately for us even in His anger.  When we realize this, we can honestly sing, “…though you were angry with me, your anger turned away, that you might comfort me.  Behold, God is my salvation.”

Think about some times in your life when God might have been angry with you.  Have you repented of that time and asked forgiveness?  Do you sense peace and goodness in your relationship with God?
